The world
GTA 5’s San Andreas (Los Santos and Blaine County) covers around 75–80 km². GTA 6 moves to the state of Leonida — a modern Vice City plus wetlands, keys and rural counties — and is widely estimated at roughly 2 to 2.7 times larger, though Rockstar has not published an official figure. Beyond raw size, previews point to much denser crowds, region-specific NPC behavior and far more interiors.
Protagonists & story
GTA 5 let you switch between three leads — Michael, Franklin and Trevor. GTA 6 centers on a criminal couple, Lucia and Jason, telling one shared story from two perspectives. Lucia is the first female protagonist in a mainline single-player GTA. Read more on the map & characters page.
Graphics & engine
GTA 5 launched in 2013 on an earlier RAGE engine and has been remastered since. GTA 6 uses an upgraded RAGE generation with a clear leap in lighting, water, density and detail. Many of the most eye-catching technical claims come from previews and leaks rather than an official spec sheet, so treat specific numbers as reported.
Online
GTA Online launched about two weeks after GTA 5 in 2013 and grew into a decade-long live-service juggernaut. GTA 6, by contrast, is launching as a single-player experience first; a separate online mode is expected later but is not confirmed.
Price
GTA 6 launches at $79.99 (Standard). GTA 5 in 2026 is a budget title — typically around ~$19.99–$29.99 (frequently ~$15 on sale) — so GTA 6 costs roughly four times as much as a current GTA 5 copy. Full details on the price & editions page.
So which should you play?
If you want the newest, biggest Rockstar world and can play on PS5 or Xbox Series, GTA 6 is the obvious headline. If you’re on PC, on a budget, or want online right now, GTA 5 and GTA Online still deliver enormous value while you wait.
